hi ther this is a picture of an immersion heater element similar to my own which is no longer working, I would be grateful if anybody could advise where I could buy one (if I can?) and a rough guide as to price.
I have placed an arrow towards the only part I am looking for.

I'm confused - you say that your element is no longer working, but your arrow indicates that you only want to buy the thermostat.

Which bit is broken, and how do you know?

The part you are after is a thermostat, any plumbing merchants/electrical wholesaler will have one.

Best thing is to take your existing stat as a sample, as their are different sizes available.

How do you know it is the stat for sure ??
