How come we are all urged to insulate our lofts, and when I come to do it, find loads of cables running on top of the plaster boards, between joists and read that cables will heat up if under that 'orrible itchy insulation stuff?
Yup, cables everywhere, all installed before building regs stated the depths of insulation required now, and electrical regs requiring specific cable sizes and methods of construction according to how much insulation you have, its a minefield alright
If you add insulation in your loft you should get a spark to carry out a pir and assess the implications. there could be a higher risk of cables overheating and possibly fire. Not actually terribly likely, but get it checked to be safe.
Same applies to cavity wall insulation, how do you know that the cowboys who installed the original wiring (or even later additions) didn't run it in the cavities?
yeah lots of houses have wiring in the cavieties (ours certainly does) because its a relatively easy (especially if theres already a draw cord in) non disruptive way to get from underfloor crawlspace to loft
do cavity wall insulation contractors generally check for wiring in the cavity?
Most lofts in a 2 storey house only have lighting circuits running through the insulation so its not normally a problem. Shower circuits need to be looked out for but as they only run for short periods they shouldn't be to much of a problem either.
Hi,
any help or solutions to my slightly earlier post (12th down the list) of cable runs in loft would be much appreciated.
The cables in question are lighting, two ring mains and a 6mm cable for a hob. Many thanks
