Interior wall knocked down, now found out its load bearing!

We have just knocked down the wall between our kitchen and dining room which we did no think was load bearing; we have now been informed tht it is...what steps should we now take?
Obviously need to get some kind of steel fitted but what about the regulation side of things? As we thought it was not load bearing we did not get any advice from a surveyor etc so do we now need to get someone in before fitting the steel?
Any help would be much appreciated!

On whose advice did you knock it down, and who has now told you it's load-bearing?
You need a SE to specify a beam and bearings, not a surveyor.
