I had an area of shot, crumbling, hollow-sounding plaster on a wall that I was having skimmed. The plasterer has skimmed the wall but when I knock it in the place that was shot, it still sounds hollow. He told me he had taken the loose plaster off and bonded it before it was plastered. If this was the case, would it still sound hollow when you knock it ?

No. Drill a small test hole and see what’s under the skim. The hole can always be filled with filler.

bonding coat is just a lightweight backing plaster depends how thick it is , and what type of wall it’s on, it is possible that it could have a more hollow sound than say sand and cement.

I would've removed the bad bit myself, for exactly this reason.
