Is this a fake chimney?

I have a Victorian house built around 1880 and it has this stack in the basement. There is no flue (the bricks just carry on round) so I was wondering what it's purpose was? Clearly there couldn't have ever been a fire in it so I assume it was purely decorative and needed to support the stacks above it. Anyone got any ideas?

Not a "fake" but an arch to hold the rest of the chimney stack up.
If you took it out, your chimney would come down
