I have an old perminat pilot gas hot water heater. Im wanting to drain the hot down so I can do some work on the plumbing. I'm I ok just turning the cold supply off at the inlet to the boiler to isolate the hot and leave the pilot on is that ok. I don't want to turn the pilot off as had a struggle getting it lite last time I had to. Thanks for any advice

Thanks for your help would this be the same for a combi then just isolate on the cold supply to the boiler. No need to shut the boiler off?

You'd be better turning it off if you don't have good reason not too, but yes, it's fine to isolate the cold supply.
