what sort of rails are they and is it a timber post?

yes they are timber post 100 * 100 + rails 38 * 88

Posts are in btw...it only occured to me after putting them in on way to fix rails... :?

cut the rail to the correct angle, and a timber cleat behind will add extra strength. you can then secure into the cleat and also into the post

Excuse my lack of knowledge here as this may sound dumb.....but what exactly is a timber cleat - do I make it or buy it?

not dumb at all. Its just a small piece of batten in effect. Its whats used to go behind timber gravel boards to secure them to posts. Its about 6" long x 2" wide x 1" deep. that gets nailed to the post and then the rail can be offered up to it. you still need to fix through the rail into the post as well though
