Joists resting over plasterboard ceiling?

Hello, I've removed part of the plasterboard ceiling in a corner of my dining room. It's the corner between an external and an internal wall. This internal wall is perpendicular to the direction of the joists so it's where the joists coming from both sides of the house meet.
Or at least it's what I thought as I noticed the joists are resting on a couple of cm of ceiling plasterboard (which is what I wasn't able to cut from below) and then there is an air gap between the wall and the joists

The picture is from another part of the house, joist "sitting" on the side of the chimney breast; what I described above looks the same, just with a mush narrower resting area
