Having had to softener installed for a number of years and then having it sit in the garage for a while before re-plumbing my new home. I started to have issues where the water would be soft for a maximum of four days before turning hard and requiring a few manual regens to get it up and going again.
I changed the resin recently for new resin, and have no problems where it goes hard again very quickly. I don't measure but it typically takes about 30 or so days in a house with two kids before I feel hardness again.
Now this is where my issue lies I understand it's a two tank setup so that means when one tank which is being used reaches some capacity it's swihiches to the second tank and the first regenerates, therefore continuing to be soft.
Now I'm guessing this 30 days is because it switches from tank 1 to tank 2. But i can't say I've ever heard it since changing the resin, doing a backwash and brine rinse, and thus after 30 days, the water is suddenly hard, requiring me to do two manual rinses to get soft again.
When running the tap water, I can hear the softener disc 'moving' , but I can't see either the top or bottom disk moving. How can I be sure that they are actually measuring to get to regen?
If it helps I have a 5 disc in my softener and I'm in london.
I guess what I'm asking is how can I test that the softener is automatically regenerating/Why am I getting hard water when it should be a cycle between two tanks with one always being soft (validated with test drops)
I'm happy to take the discs apart (have done before and all arms are intact) but I'm not sure what I should be looking for or if the problem lies even further into the tank mechanism and gears (which I'm not sure would make sense given that a manual regen works)
Any help welcome!
