please could some one inform me what the minimum height for a kitchen extractor is above a gas hob, and would this need to be fitted by a gas safe person?

thanks

No it's an electricians job, as part p of building regs for special locations(including kitchens)
The height would depend on the manufacturers instruction supplied with the unit. They will be a max and a min height, usually around the 650mm mark.

It doesn't have to be installed by a spark - it's normally done by the kitchen fitters. Only the final connection to the FCU is normally done by the spark - unless you're doing it yourself and self notifying LABC. Minimum distances are 750mm for gas hobs and 650mm for electric hobs unless specified otherwise by MIs.
