The most common cause of heating coming 'on' when not expected especially during a cold snap, is the presence of a frost thermostat somewhere. They are designed to override the time controls and turn the heating on when there is a risk of pipes or the boiler freezing. They are not always fitted, but generally present where there are exposed pipes or the boiler is located in a garage or out building for example.
