Laptop died..

My laptop has had enough, It will not turn on or charge the battery.

I'm getting 20volts out of the transformer so I think the prob lies within the laptop.

Recently the screen would flicker of and on ( the hard drive etc all stayed on though.)

It's a Dell Inspiron 4150, any thoughts anybody.

Laptops can be difficult to diagnose without delving into them. You can get a set of service manuals for dell kit on cd here. It's worth the investment and will reduce the whee bits.

Thanks for the tip on the manuals, found some online manuals and after a bit of googling, it turns out the dc jack is a weak point.

So armed with a screwdriver I stripped down the lappie to the motherboard and it is looking like it is the DC jack that is the problem.

I'm only getting 8 volts across it, but I believe this may be a signal voltage to tell the laptop I am using a genuine Dell charger, as some machines have this feature.
