Laying Ceramic Floor Tiles With Sand/Cement ???

Hi, forgive my ignorance but is it possible to lay 300mm x 300mm ceramic floor tiles by using a strong soft sand/cement mix onto a sreed (maybe unibonded first) (has this been known) providing there is of course reasonable depth of mortar, the reason I ask is that I have approx 40 metres of tiles to lay to varying depths up to maybe 20mm, to use a SLC or adhesive etc is going to work out too expensive maybe £300 - £400 !!! Or any other suggestions would be much appreciated
