1950's ex-council house we bought a couple of years ago.
While most of the walls are built with what looks like lime mortar, some of them look to have been repointed with cement. But looking closer it looks like, rather than scrape out the old mortar, a very thin layer of cement has been used to cover it up, I reckon about 5mm. In some places this is, itself, falling off.
Is this common? It looks to my untrained eye like perhaps the previous owner thought that rather than having a proper job done they'd patch up quickly/cheaply.
Secondly - repointing should be doing with the original style mortar shouldn't it? I have limited understanding but I thought that standard cement could damage the brickwork.
