LCD vs Plasma

Have a read of this.

There's various pros and cons for each - just depends what you want out of a tv. The fact that there's so much debate about which is best to go for suggests to me that there's not much in it.
I have a decent CRT tv, but when that dies or I want a bigger screen, I'll be looking at an LCD. I'd go for an LCD mainly for the fact that you don't get reflections off LCD screens like you do with plasma (or CRT). I get a bit of sun where my tv is and it's sometimes hard to see what's on the screen - this will not be a problem with an LCD.

I don't believe it! This is like something out of Beadle's about - my tv has bust. Got sound but no picture - just got stripes.
This is like the coincidence from hell.

Im sorry but I cant help finding that quite funny. Its almost like the TV read your mind!! At least its bust (almost) in time for the January sales.

I can never take plasmas seriously ever since Jade Goody pronounced on Big Brother:

"We have a [sounding posh] pl-arrr-zzz-mm-arrrr! [/sounding posh]".

Not that I ever watch the program myself. [cough]

Seriously my advise would be that if you can only get the size of screen you want in plasma then go for it if the reviews of that particular model are good but if possible I would always go LCD and always go by the spec. not just brand and price.

I have read the doc linked above, but for me the major differences are:

Plasmas leave screen burn. So if you watch SkyOne alot (for example) you will end up with it burn on. There are various ways of getting rid of the burn over time, but, tbh, I would rather not have it! There are some new Plasmas that (in laymans terms), wobble the pixels to reduce the screen burn, but this will not help if there are big blocks of static images on the screen.

The plus size of Plasmas (at the moment) is the image is generally softer and show blacks as true blacks like CRTs.

LCDs do not suffer from screen burn, but on the down side, they do not show true blacks, because of the way they are back light (I think). Some makers are bringing out LCDs with true black, but they have the shiny screens - much like the laptops with shiny screens.

Hope this 'elps!

I think it really depends if you want to go HD or not.

Plasma TVs are not HD (not unless you can get a huge one) because there is a limit to how small each pixel can be made. Thats why you dont get small plasma TVs.

If you watch a lot of content on a HD compatible LCD then a lot of the time it can look blocky because they are using 4 pixels to show each low def pixel. This is not good if you have paid a lot of money to get a good LCD TV. You should look for one with a good HD upscaler which typically means paying a little bit more for the TV.

HD comes in two versions 720p which is fine for broadcast HD content and 1080P which is what you get on HDDVD/Blueray players. If you want to get the most out of these players then you will need a 1080P TV and these are commonly available in 37" and upwards sizes.

Im sorry but I cant help finding that quite funny. Its almost like the TV read your mind!! At least its bust (almost) in time for the January sales.
I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fu**in' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Couldn't wait until the January sales - ordered a 40" Samsung LCD. The missus is saying that it's too big. Tough! Ha. :D

I agree with you Richard. I looked at plasmas and the picture quality on the good ones is excellent. The trouble for me is that there's not much choice in the 40" and below size - most plasmas start at 42" which is too big for where I have to put it. The other thing was that to get a similarly specced (1080p) plasma would have cost me another £500.

I have a 42” plasma which cost me well over £2.2K just about 3 years ago but the picture is still fantastic. I need to get another, large flat screen for the cons. & although LCD’s are definitely the future, large plasmas are so cheap now & I can get an equivalent model to the one I already have for around 1/3 what I paid! I think LCD’s are the future but the picture on equivalent (or even slightly cheaper) priced plasma screens I’ve looked at is much sharper with less trail in my view so I may go for yet another plasma.

Panasonic Viera 37" TH-37PX70

Cheers

Yeah I looked on Amazon too. What I said was, there's not much choice, not that you can't get them. I looked at that panasonic but it wasn't 1080p. If I'd have found a plasma that was 37-40", was 1080p and was less than £800 then I'd have probably bought it. The 42" plasmas that are 1080p are around £1300 - that's too big and too expensive for me. Hence the 40" LCD.
