Hi All I would really appreciate your opinions!!! We are building a new extension on a1920s house and have discovered a lead water pipe coming out of the back of house to what I think was probably the old outside loo. what's the best way to get rid of this? Can you just cap them off?

No. You can't just cap it off. Find out where it tee's off from the house water pipework. Cap it off at that branch point - do not leave a dead-leg of water esp. if it's under pressure.

Is the main water service coming to the house in lead, copper or plastic?

Any other lead present in the property?

FWIW: check, if possible, that no old soil drain has been left open and connected to the mains drainage.

hi Dan09 the mains water into the front of house is still a lead pipe. This pipe seems to be either another mains coming in or runs somewhere under the house.

What you say indicates that more lead is knocking about. Remove it - above and below floor.
Some utilities will do a free lead service replacement - enquire. If not, definitely get the lead service replaced - sod's law says that once you begin working on the property leaks will begin.

You will not have two water services, but if the property had been on a row or communal supply then perhaps the the row connecting pipe was left in place. Only speculation.
