Hi all,

I am about to replace the wooden fascia boards around my garage. Unfortunately one section is over 5m in length and I could only get 5m lengths of redwood.

Whats the best joint to use in this situation? The board is around 6" wide and about 18mm thick.

I was thinking of cutting a lap joint but would like to get quite a neat/invisible joint.

Thanks.

you get specific joining pieces [cover fillets] ask where you bought the panels from

edit ------sorry saw 5m and assumed 9mm cladding
so comments above not appropriate

when you join wood make shure your angle is away from normal veiw line and join on a joist

the neatest joint is going to be a 45degree mitre, you need to glue and pin the joint if you're not going to paint it,you will need to fill the joint with a colour match filler,if the boards are cupped(not flat)you need to scribe your cut line all the way around the board and cut the board half way through from the top and the bottom

Thanks.

So it's best to use a scarf joint (mitre joint) and glue and pin this. The boards are a little bit cupped so I'll need to choose two boards which are of similar shape if this is going to work.

So do you reckon that the 1-2" of glueing surface will be strong enough to hold the joint? I'll probably cut 4.5 & 1.5m lengths.

I'm going to paint over the wood so I should get away without too neat a joint.
