I previously had an electronic dimmer switch in place controlling 3 different sets of lights in a room, when this went wrong I decided to try and replace it with a standard 3 gang switch as the cost of repairing / replacing the dimmer control was too much.

Unfortunately I did not note down / check the wiring before trying to replace the switch and now I have the following.

3 cables
2 x twin+earth (Red / black + bare earth)
1 x 3core+earth (Red / blue / yellow + bare earth)

The 3 gang switch I have happens to be a two way version (had it left over from another project).

I have a test meter but I wanted to check the correct procedure to identify with wires to connect and where.

It appears that when the electronic dimmer switch was fitted the 2 black wires + the blue were connected together in a single chocblock and then extended in one single black wire.

For some reason I can't quite get my head around what connections to make.

Any help / advice greatly appreciated.

Connect the 2 blacks and the blue together with a piece of connector block and tuck into back of the box.

Sleeve the earths and connect into the terminal on the back of the box, and if required, take an earth wire from here to the new switch plate.

That leaves 3 reds and a yellow, one of the reds will be the permanent live. Identify the permanent live and connect into terminal C on one of the switches. You then need to link all three C terminals together with two short bits of red wire.

The remaining three wires are the individual switchlines and these connect into the L1 terminals on the switches in whatever order you prefer.

Perfect, thanks a lot got all three lights working now.
