We have just moved house. House is a 1930's semi detached.

The two chimney breasts downstairs both have a stainless steel insert in them (15" above floor) with a gas supply - looks like the previous owner had gas fires there.

We have removed one of the inserts with the plan to cut the 'hole' back down to floor level again so we can put in a log fire or a wood burner, only to find that the previous owner has filled it all in with concrete which makes it really hard to cut out again.

Does anyone know if we can just install a log burning grate in the existing hole ie. 15" above the floor.

Our chimneys are fine and have been swept.

Thanks
