got this shower tray that sits straight onto the floor and the trap and pipework goes into the void under the floor

just curious as to fixing this is it still a case of using marine ply and bedding it down with sand and cement#?

Normally yeah, check manufacturers instructions but we fitted about 6 last week and they all wanted that

One tip I would suggest is to avoid the temptation to use PVA on the ply, an acrylic primer is much, much better. The same sort as the recommend for self levelling floor compound.

PVA is water based and when you put wet cement on it, it goes slightly liquid again and
because the cement is more porous than the ply it soaks it up. It would also lose its grip if it got damp which isn't a great idea under a shower tray.
