I recently stripped 2 layers of wallpaper from a room to leave the plaster bare.

I cleaned the walls with a sugar soap solution, before painting the walls with matt paint.

The problem is that the paint doesn't seem to be applying well and is patchy in some places.

I have no idea why this is happening and wonder if this is anything to do with the cheap matt paint I used.

Should I have used any particular type of undercoat??

What Brand did you use and what is the exact name of the Matt Emulsion ?

If the plaster was bare it should have been mist coated with a thinned coat of emulsion then a more thicker second coat. Another reason for the patchy apearance might be areas where the old paste may still be lurking..even after all that washing off..

It was a B&Q own brand. I'm thinking about putting a primer coat on first. Is that advisable?

Some good points there from "confident & competent". Though, me thinks the problem is your "cheap" B&Q Matt Emulsion. The thing about this emulsion is it is only good when over coating white. My advice is go and buy Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt in White.
