Double wall sockets! when to fix metal back or plastic back boxes? Obviously the metal boxes sit into a channel in the brickwork and the plastic on skirting boards. But what is difference and when to use wot?

cheers

Plastic is to mount on a surface, metal is to recess into a wall, you can also get plastic drylining boxes to recess into plasterboard walls, but metal ones can be used for this as well in conjunction with a noggin

If i was fitting a dbl socket near the floor - why would I choose 1 over the other and is there times when a wall mounted would not be recommended?

A metal box and plate is a bit more resistant to being banged by the hoover, furniture or your boot, but the better approach is not to put it on the skirting board, but recessed into the wall at a height of 450mm or more.
