Microwave feasability

Hi all,

I am a reasonable fixer of most things. I have just been given a Delonghi microwave to have a look at. It is worth saving due to size and appearance.
The story is that the display works buts thats about it. I haven't even plugged it in yet.
So the question from this post is "are these things generally fixable" or am I on a hiding to nothing ?

The first thing you need to be aware of is that there are some lethal voltages inside a microwave oven. The magnetron in our old 600 watt model runs at about 8kV!

The power supply that drives the magnetron is not complicated - any half-decent electronics engineer would recognize it instantly - but you do need to know what you're doing because capacitors can hold a charge long after the power has been switched off.

Sorry if this sounds negative but, unless you know all about capacitors, diodes and voltage multipliers, I would keep the lid on.

I fixed a microwave from the dump, opened it and internal fuse had blown , lasted 5 years after changing it. Anything other than that I wouldn't bother since you can buy for £30 these days.

Space cat is spot on you need to ensure you discharge the capacitor first but if youve no exsperience then dump it and if it is badged as a delonghi it carnt be up to much anyway really not worth the effort

Hi,

All sorted. It was an 800mA 5kV fuse feeding the magnetron.
Fuse had gone but had not vapourised inside so looks like it had just got tired and given up.
Sourced new fuse from eBay. Has been working for a couple of weeks now.
