Hi,

I want to fit some more power points in my garage and was wondering if they need to be anything special. I currently have one point and cabling is housed in pvc pipework and the point itself seems to be heavy duty rather than similar to internal items. Does a higher spec need to be used? Does cabling have to be put into pvc pipe?

I also want to install a point for a MIG welder. Can you tell me what this should be rated at?

Thanks in advance.

You need some common sense and look at what you are doing in the garage! If only parking car then not much need for anything over a house but if a workshop then I would use metal clad sockets. As to conduit twin and earth does not go easy through conduit so I would consider Ali-tube cable and no conduit. Often trunking far easier with twin and earth.

As to MIG welder a good inverter will run on a 16A outlet without much problem and at a pinch will work on 13A but cheap transformers will likely need more.

I found welding sets in general at output 25V plus 1 volt per 25A so at 100A it will need 29V at 125A 30V etc. Inverters have good transformers will very little loss as at 125A output it is just on 16A however the old transformers are much more inefficient and would likely draw 20A.
