you shouldn't realy hang a mirror above a fire place because it encourages people to stand infront of the fire which can be dangerous. but thats just my opinion
Good point from breezer, although roasting your chestnuts on an open fire will be a bit of a seasonal thing 
What sort of mirror is it, ie is it framed, on a chain, does it have holes in a la bathroom mirror, how big etc basically you need to make sure your fixing will support the weight of the glass. Will the heat from the fire cause problems with the cold glass? I'm sure the soot will.
