missing earth connection

I've had a few instances in the past where I've unscrewed a socket or switch plate to learn that the earth cable has popped out of its terminal.

It happens less so as I am now conscious of this and also use the plug in tester to detect missing earth on the sockets.

What are the implications of a earth wire not properly connected on switch/socket?

Should a fault occur where the live wire contacts the faceplate (if metal, of course) it will remain live instead of the fuse/MCB 'instantly' disconnecting the power.
