Mist Coat Advice

Hi,

I have freshly plastered room that has properly dried. One of the walls has 3 spot lights directly above which highlights any and every imperfection of an evening - by day it looks fine.

I mist-coated the plaster with fresh plaster paint then add 2 top coats of Wilko washable paint. By day looked fine but of an evening under lights some areas are smoother thank others - I think there where different textures from the mist-coat which are causing the top coat imperfections.

So I have stripped the paint off, lightly sanded the plaster and miss-coated again. Now that this has dried I can again see the different texture in parts (very slightly pited i guess from the nap of the fine roller) so I'm holding fire on the top coat.

Question being - should I lightly sand the mist-coat with the aim of having a totally flat finish. I don't really mind if the finish is slightly texture or flat - it just needs to be consistent and since I don't seem be able to add the texture to the flat parts making it instead dead flat seems the way to go?

This is driving me mad - any suggestions.

Thanks.

Do you mean the finish of the plaster itself is the issue or your painting is the issue or both?

Photos of the problem would help posters to help you.

The finish of the plaster is fine, dead flat. The texture I'm referring to is apparent once the mist-coat has dried. I'm lightly sanding this so it is flat. Is this the right thing to do, will the top coat adhere.

I'm a DIYer and not a trade but I've had this problem myself but with a crappy plaster finish and trying to unbodge it. The point of the mist coat is to seal the new plaster as it's a bit thirsty and will cause the top coat to peel if not done right. If it were me, I'd mist coat again after you have sanded. Is your paint to water dilution too thin or your roller sleeve low end? I don't get why you are having such major issues with getting the texture right?
