hi there,i am installing an external boiler which is fed by fuel pellets, this requires to be hooked up to phone line for monitoring on line, does this require its own separate line,or can it be an extension of my existing broadband line.

What does the manufacturer say? My guess is something like "we recommend a dedicated line for this product". I guess the questions to ask though are:

How often does it phone home?
If it can't get through, how often does it retry and how many attempts does it make?
How often is the phone line that you want to use used?
How quickly do you need to receive messages from the boiler? I assume one message might be "I'm running low on fuel". You can probably wait a few hours for that to come through. "I failed to light" you might want to receive a little quicker but how quickly?

As you suggest, you get a POTS service with a broadband line whether you want it or not. Noone ever uses my landline. Except my parents. In my case I'd register a VoIP number for them and free up the line if I had to!
