Hi everyone, I'm not particularly a 'Green-nut', but I love getting things for free! I'm a technology teacher, and my technician basically heats his home from all the offcuts and old projects that our very large department produces.

I want a piece of the action!

Our new house has this big stud wall, I think to make space to hang the gas fire off. The wall is coming down, the fire is already decommissioned. It looks like they plummed the new boiler right into where the back boiler used to be, I'll relocate those.

What I'm asking you guys is, do I have enough space?! It's 26" wide x 23" Tall x 14" Deep.

Could I use this liner?!

All the pipes I have to reroute, no problem really.

It would be great to hear from someone who has done the same.

It's a lot of hassle cutting wood, keeping it going and cleaning it out.
Did I mention the dirt and dust?
People have rose tinted glasses on when they think of putting a log or two on the fire and it will heat the house all day and night long.
Wrong. Wood has a fairly low energy output. You'll need sacks and sacks of it. Think tank of hot water one sack of wood.

To be honest people soon get bored of it and then just use the gas boiler.

Sure it's easy enough to do but need a good bit of piping, header tanks etc to do properly.
I had an old rayburn for coal and wood with an oil boiler. Chucked it out and went to a gas range and lpg boiler with lpg gas fire. Clean and easy. Heat at the press of a button.

I guess I should clarify to say this would purely be for the romantic element. A modern condenser combi boiler sorts the house out for heat and water. The pipes are going to be rerouted out of the area.

i have a tiger 5 stove in my back lounge. 5kw output into a room that probably needs 1.8kw. lounge door open and a fan in the hallway blowing air into the room, roomstat in the hall reads 25deg c. heating switches off, kids open bedroom doors to get benefit from landing heat. gas bills lower and i get free wood from everywhere.

dirt, dust and cleaning? yeah a bit, burner is vacced out once a week, chimney swept once a year, logs to cut etc etc.
i need the exercise, tv is crap so dont mind getting up once an hour for more logs plus more exercise.

half a century ago people did this every day, day in day out. air changes in the room help to reduce colds etc

would i have another one? defo.....
front lounge is being done as we type.........

some people say that they aren't that efficient, when wood is free it doesnt matter. as for being green, it has been said that the co2 it produces when being burned is offset by the o2 it produces whilst growing.
(no idea if that is true tho)

"Could I use this liner?!"

No.

The flue component pictured, which looks to me like a bashed bit of single-wall flue pipe rather than a liner, was designed for gas.

There are informative threads about twin-walled flue-liners, wood-burners, flue temperatures and condensation of POCs, along with hearths, ventilation requirements and so on on this very site, but I suggest you'd be better off getting your local HETAS fitter in to to advise and quote.

 "I'm a teacher....... It looks like they plummed the new boiler...."

got to agree, dont let anyone talk you out of it. i've got two, one upstairs and one downstairs. didnt get them to save money, but ended up cutting my monthly bill from £110, to £25pm. still have to buy coal, but taking that into account, i save around £40pm. dust and dirt, only if you dont clean regular anyway which we do, and vac stoves out every couple of days.
