Hi

I have got up today switched on to find no central heating. The pilot light will come on for only a short period of time then turns off.

The room thermostat is set to full the timer is on constant for heating and water. The water is working just all the radiators are cold.

The thermostat switch is on high on the boiler itself.

It was working fine when I turned if off last night.

It is a Myson Apollo Fanfare 40 SI.

Can anyone help - its cold today!

Thanks

Are you saying that the boiler will light up OK and heat up the water in the hot water cylinder but will not light up and heat the radiators?

If so, it sound like a problem with your motorized valve. You will either have one valve, like the left pic, or two valves, like the right pic.

It could be the motor has gone in a valve or the switch inside the valve is faulty.

Post more info and you will get more help ;)

The boiler light lights up for about 30-40 seconds then goes off, this happens about every 20-30 minutes. We are only assuming that it is heating up the water because we have plenty of hot water at the moment.

I can hear a humm in the airing cupboard where the cylinder and the light is on to say it is on constant set for water and heating. The radiators do not get warm at all.

It is a two value.

Does this help at all?

look at the pic above and see if the metal bar is loose or you have risistance if you have push the bar over and hook it in manual position

Hi

It is a one value not a two value wrong information passed to me

Any further advice?

But that is only a temporary solution, assuming the valve is the culprit :!:

From the OP's reply it sound more like an overheating problem, possibly the pump is u/s.

To the OP

Just read your latest post which stopped me writing about two valves!

So you have one valve, like the left pic. One branch goes to the hot water cylinder, the other goes to the rads and the middle (input) branch is fed from the pump.

Turn the CH off at the timer and turn the HW up at the stat on the cylinder. The boiler should light and you should hear the pump running.

(The best way to hear the pump is the screwdriver trick. Put the sharp end of a big screwdriver against the pump and put your ear to the other end. You will hear the hum of the pump. it will vary in pitch if you change speed)

If you can't hear the pump it could have jammed. Turn off the hot water at the timer, remove the large silver screw in the end of the pump and check if you can turn the spindle (clockwise) using a screwdriver. It should turn easily.

The pumb didn't work when we tried that

We took the big silver screw from the pumb and moved the spindle.

What should happen next. Some dirty water came out is that right??

So you could not hear the pump working?

Was the pump shaft was easy to turn with a screwdriver?

If yes: then either the pump is u/s or the pump overrun thermostat in the boiler is u/s. You could check this by temporarily connecting the pump to a mains supply. If it works then the overrun stat is definitely u/s.

If no: there could be sludge in the system preventing the pump turning.

Two options for removing sludge: powerflush - expensive £400-800 depending on whom you use; or, DIY using a sludge remover such as Sentinel X400 from B&Q etc. Instructions are on the can.

Some black liquid is not unusual, though it could suggest that there is not enough inhibitor in the system to prevent sludge formation

Thanks for your help.

In the end we called someone out who had it working in 15 minutes something to do with a valve.

In the near future needs replacing.
