mysterious hole

I have recently found a half inch hole in the upright of a solid wooden chair. At first I suspected woodworm but they are normally small eight part holes. Any ideas. The wood has been eaten well into the chair

with no sign of an exit hole.

1/2" hole is rather big, can you post a picture ?
