Hello All

So I have had a NEST termostat installed well over a year now. For most part it seems to do the job. However the problem is this.

The NEST is installed downstairs in my lounge and is connected to my new combi Bolier.
However as soon as I walk up stairs the temperature is about 5 degrees colder.

It's been a fairly mild winter but it is a bit of a worry as I rent my spare room out and want the house to me at the same temp.

I have insulation installed in the loft. However the roof is very old and it is fairly windy up there.
What would happen if I bought another NEST thermostat and installed it up stairs?
I'm not sure what to do really?

Cheers
Paul

a very honest and helpful answer.

wish more people like you lived on this forum. there are some nasty charterers on the forum, especially heating and pluming.

There are a few things you could do. Some more expensive than others.

First you should work on balancing your radiators so that they all heat up at the same time (roughly). This should result an an even distribution of heat across your house, assuming all things being equal.

If that does not work you need to figure out why your upstairs is not able to reach or sustain its optimal temperature. This could be too small or ineffective radiators, sludge in radiators, poor insulation etc. We would need to know more about your setup.

Short term you could buy a Nest thermostat stand which would effectively make the thermostat portable and you could move it upstairs. This will put your fuel bills up as the heating will stay on for longer, at least from what you've described.

If you do want a second Nest, you will need to install a new Zone valve and separate the upstairs and downstairs zones.

Lots of things for you to check.

So just to give some more details my house was completely refurbished and the boiler and the radiators are all brand new so less than a year old.

I tried to move the nest up stairs in my bedroom however it just stays orange on 18c and it never reaches that temp upstairs.
Whilst it is doing that downstairs gets too gets to 20c.

Its a GreenStar Worcester Bosch Compact 25Si Boiler
My house is a midterraced 1940's house but it has wall insulation and it has loft insulation.

Could it be possible this bolier is not up to the job?
I may have to get a plumber in for there advice :(

Hi,

Assuming here that the nest is actually connecting to the heat link when upstairs (evident right?)
If your upstairs never gets to the set temperature, your boiler might not be up to the task.
However if downstairs is getting too hot you can try balancing the rads by partly shutting them downstairs.
This will allow hotter water to reach the rads further down the line and potentially allow upstairs to get to the required temp.

With well balanced rads each room should be able to reach the same temp if your boiler/piping/radiator set has sufficient capacity and insulation is sufficient

Your boiler has plenty of power! It can heat a five bed detached house!

But your rads need balancing.

That can be done by a DIYer but you need to closely follow the FAQ instructions on this site.
