I have assembled a new PC, it has a new PCI modem as my old machine used a smaller one.

The old PC usually connected at about 52KB, the new one connects at about 31.

I have tried unistalling it, and updating the driver, no luck.

The modem packing says "56K Hardware Modem... ITU-TV.92/90 56,000bps... ADDON AM56HIT...Intel V.92

Looking at Modem Properties, it says
PCI Slot 1 (PCI bus 0, device 7, function 0)
Intel Corporation 536EP Modem
Maximum Port Speed 115200

Quick Connect is off (what's that?)
Driver is Intel Corporation
23/12/2004
Version 4.77.8.0

Advanced settings: FIFO, both buffers High.

There are no device conflicts

I am using the same Master phone socket and cable (about 3M length)

Device Status says This device is working properly.
Troubleshooter finds nothing

I Queried the Modem and it says Success... Intel 536EP... H.324... V.92 capable...

I had a look at the Log (appended below)

Can't think of anything else.

Anybody got any ideas?

The old modem was an AMR (Audio Modem Riser) type which has a smaller slot that the PCI, so I had to buy this new modem. I am using the same connection and cable as before, so it is disappointing that the new modem is slower than the old.

edited to say:

The documentation says it is not a software modem.

Just in case, I took the modem card out, (no visible jumpers) and re-fitted it two slots lower, so it is about 70mm below the AGP 8x card, in case of interference. I have routed the USB cables away from it, there are no other cables, fans or drives within 150mm.

Also, I connected via my BT phone line (I normally use the NTL line) and that also connected at exactly 31.2 Kbps. I wonder if there is anything suspicious about it always connecting at that speed, with two different phone lines and two different ISPs?

Certainly sounds like a driver issue - you could try searching for alternative drivers and 'hope' they give better results.

Also, some ISP's have different numbers for different types of modems as Ecosse do - check yours is on the right one if applicable.

Have had a bash at the Nova Hell Line, they suggest swapping it for a Software Modem.

That still implies a driver issue to me.
A software modem uses the CPU to carry out its work - a hardware one uses its own steam basically.
It shouldn't have any bearing on connecting - then again, it will have different drivers to the ones you are using at the moment so that in itself might be enough to get you back to your original speeds.

Have tried reinstalling modem, checking for updated driver, even swapping for an old HaM V92 modem with different driver I downloaded from Intel, which also only connects at 31.2.

It's as if the PC is capping the speed.

(P.S. this is a newly built PC - I bought it barebones, added disks, new modem, AGP and installed Window XP and Apps, reloaded "files and Settings" from CD, copied in data files; uninstalled and reinstalled modem several times).

what speed does it say the modem is on the box?

i would still suggest a differnt modem, would have been easier than all the hassle you have been through so far

the box says 56K hardware modem

I've fitted a different modem (am old HaM, and downloaded its drivers from Intel) which also connects at exactly 31.2kb

i would still try a differnt modem.

perhaps some one swaped it over and got a 56k modem for 36k price

HAve a look at this page - under the heading :-
A modem with a V.92 Intel chipset runs slowly

Not relevant I guess?
:?:

Well, i tried a diferent modem - a D-Link DFM-562IS software modem which is supposed to be good (I got a new sealed one off Fleabay at less than half price... no support line for me!)

Sadly, that one is even worse - won't detect dial tone. I have verified that there is one really, I can hear it if I put a phone on the other socket of the modem.

I have difficulty making Windows install the driver off the disk, it keeps trying to install its own. I have done Windows Update since installing the modem and driver.

Maybe I have something wrong with my PC build - when I insert the installation disk and select "install drivers" I don't get the screen dialogue shown in the user guide - but Windows detects the new hardware, and installs its own drivers. It might be relevant that I have only recently assembled the PC.

I have to use "update driver" "I have a disk" "don't autofind - I will select the driver" and it then will install the drivers off the disk, but it still doesn't work. If i look in Device Manager it does show the D-Link Modem with the correct model, though in "Driver Details" for it there are 12 drivers; maybe it's using the wrong one? The ticked one is a Microsoft one, I can see the suupplier's one in the list, can't see how to select it.

Bl**ing thing.

I've had a roam round Hyperterminal (which I'm not familiar with) and can address the modem with AT command, but it still won't connect, even when I turn the wait for dial tone thing off.

And it's not the line or cable or connector, I've substituted them all on old and new modem; and tried a different PCI socket.

This may not be relevant... It is part of some Aztech diagnostics I was glancing through..

.... it is likely the PC has been rebuilt and the drivers for the modem have been installed in the wrong order.
If you have a Non-Intel Chipset (such as VIA, ALi or AMD) then you MUST install the PCI-Serial Controller first.
Otherwise the modem will appear correctly in Device Manager but windows will not be able to communicate with the Card.
You will need to remove all entries for the modem in Device Manager and then reboot and reinstall as per the instructions ...
-

Well, I have got an AMD processor and SIS chipset; but I have removed and reinstalled the modem a few times, while trying to get the right driver attached.

The system devices include various PCI things (can't see a PCI controller though).

Thanks for your interest, I'll keep trying...
