New opening for garage door.

Hello. First post so be gentle please. I have searched this article and found some of what I need to know, but I just have a couple of other queries.

I have a standard domestic garage. I want to put a new door opening in the back wall ( which supports the roof) measuring H1981 x W838 mm.

I've ordered the door and frame and a lintel but think I have the wrong one. ( Concrete steel reinforced 100 x 65 x 1200). If so it's not a problem as I can cancel it. I believe the one I want is the 'L' shaped steel one 1200mm wide which leaves over 150mm each side. This seems easier to install. Would this be the correct one?

Regarding installation of the lintel, should it be immediately above the opening, ie so you can see it at the top of the opening, or higher up. ( Probably a stupid question as I'm just thinking if this was the case then the lower bricks might fall out). I'm aware of requirements for propping etc it's just really the lintel type and position I'm unsure about.

Any advice would be appreciated

Is it brick or bock? How many courses above to support? What sort of roof, how heavy and what elevation?

Hi thanks for the reply. It's a single storey brick walled garage with single thickness brick walls. The end wall, ( not the pitched one) where the door might go supports a tiled pitched roof with timber rafters. Floor is concrete slab. There will be between 5 and three courses ( depending on whether or not I have steps.) above the opening. That's all I can tell you. The reason I asked for the position of the lintel is that it might only be 3 courses to the top of the wall and I wondered if the lintel could go at the top beneath the timbers but spanning the opening. I just want to comply with building control, but having some difficulty in contacting them.

Well here are the photo's, hopefully.

I've measured from the top of the second course above the damp course. It came out in the middle of a brick but I would go up to the next one leaving one course at the top of the door frame.
( The door size looks wide in the photo's but it's correct in real life, probably to do with the compression). Anyway, outside the top of the door would be in the soffit! Yes I know it needs changing but it just creates another problem. I can't put a door in the side as the garage is on a lower level than the house. I might just put a giant cat flap in and crawl through

It would be easier to acro up the roof to support it cut out the brickwork completely put lintel in then put bricks back in.
I'm doing similar accept I have no roof to contend with . Freestanding twin skin brickwork with concrete fab garage otherside.
Got myself a Upvc door for free other day

Thanks for the reply and well done with the door! It's on hold now as the car has just died......priorities
