Hi all

Caveat: I know zero about this stuff so please feel free to explain like I'm 5.

Just moved house, finally got a garage, was planning on using the pitched roof as storage. They've put a few bits of mdf over the joists, but I'm concerned that it all looks a bit weak to be taking any weight.

The joins have those flat metal things on (see pics) but they're not even nailed on - is that normal? I can't work out what's actually taking the weight of the roof.

They've also nailed up some seemingly random scaffold type boards at weird angles. You can see one in one of the pics. I'm planning on having a mate look at it soon but wanted to get myself a bit educated while I'm here.

Does this look dodgy to you? If you need more pics let me know.

Cheers
Matt

Oh sorry just to clarify, they've just lay some mdf over the joists to work like basic shelving. That was my plan tbh - to store stuff from the costco run etc. But I have no idea how much weight that kind of structure can take!

Trusses like that normally take the weight of the ceiling, so I'm sure you'll be fine. The random bits of diagonal wood are normal and used to brace the trusses, or so I understand , due to fit a load myself in the next few weeks.

Oh ok cheers mate, it looked a bit random and unplanned to me! Thought it would be a bit more uniform than that! Much appreciated

Matt

Thanks all - Costco here I come!

Still think it's weird having a scaffolding type beam diagonally down one side raised up on a block of wood... doesn't seem very professional to me, but then what do I know! Cheers gents

I'll pretend your 5:

Don't go and spend all your pocket money in Costco on crap to store in your garage roof. Put it in your piggy bank ;)

ha! Cheers buddy! It's mainly things like arse-wipes, kitchen roll, cat litter etc which I never realise has run out until it runs out. I won't overdo it though ;)
