Hello Barney.
Short of advising you to call a registered spark in to look at this work all I can advise is that you post some pictures of your supply cable, consumer unit and anything else you think may be relevant. In the mean time  turn your power circuit off and work from your laptop batteries.

The metal conduit could well be offering the earth, this would need to be checked for continuity though.

i have checked the continuity and all seems to be fine to the metal back box but the back box doesnt have a earth terminal!! could i use a hooped crimp and crimp 1.5 earth to it and srew into the back box and wire into the socket, so then the front plate on the socket will be earthed. would this be ok??

As the earth is good to the box you can do as you propose. Use a good self-tapping screw and washer to make sure of a good connection.

The fixing screws that hold the socket to the box provide and additional connection, but shouldn't be relied on!
