when overhead lines and 3rd rail came in they had to learn what to do in case of oh sh*T
part of it was to short it out.
ok so they had a "wooden cutom made stick" (obviously it had a steel plate) but they had to do similar to what was shown in the video, only backwards so they were not blinded by the flash.
oh and he did say "it didn't harf bang" i bet it did too
my cousin is a digger driver and once broke through a street lighting cable whilst doing subbie work for the council..
the head council guy on site said "Just short it with the bucket, they can fix it later.."
and so he tried.. and tried, and tried.. turns out that street lighting is either not fused at all and comes straight off the transformer, or is very highly fused as a direct short wasn't tripping it..
i've also been told that the old way of finding a fault under a road was to line up the guys you had along the road and keep re-setting the trip untill one of then felt the thud of the cable under his feet..
