Ok, Who has lit their house up then??

You must really be annoyed - that's 9 exclamation marks in there! That's more than the average entry of that Terry chap that posts on here quite a bit, and he seems to have genuinely mistaken them for full-stops :D.

there's no point arguing on questions of taste.
I'm not- just stating that IMO these lights are tacky, they are not subtle, they are not attractive and they do not "bring class" to any abode.

But they do send a firm message, that by my standards, the people in the house have poor taste.

And it's nothing to do with "bah humbug", but everything to do with not having a different set of æsthetic standards at Christmas. If it's tacky and cheap-looking in July, it is tacky and cheap-looking in December.

If turkey is a bland and dry meat in July, it is a bland and dry meat in December.

If an incredibly rich and heavy steamed fruit pudding is the last thing you'd want to eat after a large roast dinner in July, then it's the last thing you'd want to eat after a large roast dinner in December.

The analogy with common sense is quite valid - and what I consider to be my common sense does not desert me at Christmas either...

It not exclamation my numer 1 key gets stuck sometimes. :D

Now seriously.

When I was a boy we had a little row of candles lights in the front porch and this was enough to bring Christmas joy to a young boy.

I remember every year on the second sunday of the advent after church my father would climb up into the attic shouting, sometimes shouting violently at my mother requesting information for the location of the fairy lights.

My mum would lovingly hang the above mentioned lights on the hand felled tree and turn on. Five minutes later, slightly less lovingly she was shouting at me to start turning all the bulbs to find the loose ones. Ten mminutes later a bit more annoyed now she had an epithany that one bulb may be dead.

I remember the warm feeling of being sent to the village iron mongers shop in short trousers to purchase a replacement bulb and running back in knee deep snow holding the bulb in my fingerless mittens. Then imagine the scene with my tear stained eye of joyousness looking up at the beauty that a 15 year old set of daisy lights can bring.

This is the true meaning of Christmas. What memories!

And you tell the kids of today with their Wii's, playstations and 6ft high illuminated santa and they just look through you :D

PS wagon wheels were also the size of a dinner plate too.

And Tizer tasted of something.

But tangerines!

Real tangerines, not satsumas or clementines.

What happened to them?

When was the last time you saw a tangerine?

They were banned under health and safety due to difficulty in peeling them. Also pips were deemed to be a chocking hazzard

At halloween we carve up a pumpkin and hang it over the porch with a magilite stuck in it head to illuminate the scary mouth and eyes.

At Xmas I hang some LED lights- this year it was intense blue LED's x 360.

I like having trick or treaters (youngsters not the gangster teens), and at Xmas we have carol singing. Last night we had a 6 piece hand bell ringing group.

They were 'most excellent' and got £3 for the charity they were collecting for.

Lights, as with all things Xmas are done 12 nights before and extend for 12 nights after. Then they come down. They also get switched off at 23:00 and don't get turned on before nightfall.

We do it for no reason other than fun, and for a sense of Xmas spirit.

As for the suggestion that I must be either a chav or of sub cultural breeding for doing so- neither is true.
The kids like it, it's been tradition for a few years and the lights outside are as much about Xmas as having a 6ft tree stuck in the front room bay window.

Happy Xmas everyone- enjoy the holiday, who knows Santa might just bring you a new set of side cutters :D
