I've just purchased a property recently. I've tried to open the fireplace as we were told that it was working. After removing the plaster, it was what I came across. (see the first picture)

There is concrete on the right on side of the chimney breast. (See the second pictures)

I understand that it has been board up. what kind of fireplace was there before? I don't understand why the opening is not in the middle of the chimney breast.
I hope somebody can give me some explanations.
