Opinions on which side to have these driveway gates facing the roadside...

The picture shows my original intention to have this side facing the property, and the side facing the road would be all T&G painted the same dark grey colour with a weather cap.

Once I offered the T&G to the stained gate frame, the contrast is making me question whether I should have the side shown in the picture facing the road. This is one of a pair spanning 2.4 metres by 1.3 metres (each gate 1.2 metres wide)

Do you think it would look odd, or should I stick with convention?

I'm assuming the reason for the gates is security.
If so, have the side most difficult to climb facing the road.

No, far from it. I live in a place that hasn't moved out of the 1930s. The last theft around here was in 1971 when someone stole a sweet banana out of the pick 'n' mix from Miss Wobblebottoms sweet shop in the village.

The gates are so I can work on my car and do other stuff in the garage whilst allowing my dogs to come with me. I have a 40 metre long drive from the road to the garage, so am dividing it in half.

I'd still stick with convention. You wouldn't want to upset Miss Wobblebottom.

I'm curious to learn how you know when the last theft was. ;)

You said it’s to be painted so there won’t be any contrast?
I would have left it natural wood (oiled) if I decided to hang it that way around. I will have a play around when it comes to a dry fit and see how they look.
