Coach Bolt for Hook and Band Hinge through facing side of Gate

I've just made two driveway gates (1.2 x 1.3m) from 4x2 with 12mm T&G on the facing side (the side seen from the roadside). I will be hanging them on 6x6 posts using 450mm adjustable hook and band hinges.

Every video I have watched that shows how to fit these hinges never show the facing side. You can see the coach bolt head going through the hinge on the back of the gate, so I assume the washer and nut is on the facing side. In my case that would be through the T&G and look bodged.

Can I fit the coach bolt with a washer through a recessed hole in the frame prior to attaching the T&G and bolt up from the hinge side? If so, how can I stop the coach bolt turning inside. Or its there a better way of doing this where a bolt isn't showing on the outside of the gate?

I recently completed a similar project with loglap - The DIYnot hivemind certainly helped me through the process.

In order not to spoil the external aesthetic, screw the bolt through the 4x2, recess if necessary and put shiplap over the top. I angle grinded (ground?) the end of my bolt to fit

Pictures taken just now to show the non-showing bolts. My loglap has bowed a little, but I shut it under tension to make it almost invisible from outside

Regards

Tet

You can use acorn nuts or dome nuts which look rather attractive, especially if you use stainless ones. Otherwise, paint them black. A large washer will prevent them biting into the wood.

The heads of coach bolts are neater. There is a washer available with a square hole, but if you ever hope to undo the nuts, grease them well and use stainless. IME old coach bolts are always rusted solid and need to be removed with a hacksaw.
