Hi all, Ive been using the information in these forums for ages now but never needed to post a question as there is soo much information on here!

until now.....

I am looking to fit an outside light, not a problem, I was originally going to take a fused spur from a socket on the ring main to do the job.

After investigating a little further it appears that the socket I was going to fuse from is actually a spur from the ring main.

Can I use this socket or do I need to find another socket which is part of a ring? (for reference the outside light is a 23w energy saving bulb)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Al

You could put an FCU before the socket instead of after but make sure you can still isolate the outside light in case a fault takes down the rest of the circuit.

The isolation needs to be double pole isolating both Live and Neutral to ensure neutral to earth faults can be isolated.

Also if the cable is buried within wall less than 50mm, it will require RCD protection, if no other mechanical protection is offered to cable.
It maybe that the circuit already has RCD protection which is fine.
But if not the options would be to install RCD/RCBO at CU for the whole circuit or instead of installing a standard fuse connection, use one that also has integral RCD protection.
Such as RCD and FCU

Also permitted safe zone of routing of cable must be complied to, link below.

Chase in walls can be no deeper than, 1/3rd of walls depth vertically and no more than 1/6th on the horizontal plain.
