We have just moved into our house which was 'done up' and have now been told that the outside wall rendering should not be all the way down to the floor as damp will rise up it. On the main part of the house there is a line below which I assume is the damp course. The house itself is below the garden and one side of what is now the utility room is almost completely against the garden with the render down as far as the ground. We have been told it needs a "bell bead" what is this and is it possible to do it oneself? Any advice greatly received.

Hi SBC,
If you go to your local builders merchant he will show you "bellcast beading", or Google it now to get some idea. They are 3mtr lengths of galvanised beading that are designed when rendered or roughcasted over, to form a bell shape drip, to throw water that has ran down the wall, away from the wall. They are fixed with galvanised nails,on or slightly above the dampcourse. Their positioning is very important, get it wrong and you bridge the dampcourse and problems with damp will occur. Below the bellcast,(unless you have good brickwork), it is always advisable to cement render as well with waterproofer in the mix,it gives a neat finish and is also another waterproof barrier against the soil/garden. With all due respect, this is definitely NOT a job for you. If the render on other parts of your house has already bridged the damp course  it might be worth your while to get in touch with a local builder, and get experienced eyes to look at the whole job in real time as soon as possible, and take it from there. Hopefully, with good weather on the way soon, this is the time to get organising. ;)

Hi, many thanks for your very informative answer. Have had a quote of over £600 but just seemed rather high as it's not a big wall but could be it's the going rate.

Get another couple of quotes on top of that one SBC and you'll get a better idea. There's a bit of work involved in getting the job put right. Your going about it the right way though by getting quotes. Good luck to ya.
