Overflow pipe: external part is cracking up

The section of the cold water tank overflow pipe that is outside the house, exposed to weather, is starting to crack and break up.
I am thinking of cutting back to a couple of inches of sound material and siliconing a small extension section on.
I live in a bungalow, so access is not a problem.
What diameter pipe do I need to look for?

Alternatively, smear some CT1 over it, then hit it with water based paint to protect it from the UV light.

The end of the overflow pipe has cracked off, so an extension pipe might be best.

Maybe an overflow pipe connector such as this will do the job:

Buy a length of overflow tube ,and solvent weld a new section in ,using the coupling you linked to.
