Paint pads vs roller?

I've been given a paint pad set by a friend who's decided to paper rather than paint.

Has anyone used one of these before?

Are they any good? Will it give a different effect to a paint roller?

I like to know whats what before I start using something I haven't used before!!

The answer to my question came up at the bottom. Still undecided what to use though.
