At present stripping paint from door surrunds and skirtings by using hot air gun with scraper, after removing surface paint there appears to be a grey/black residue left. Any ideas as to removal of residue in order to restore grain of wood.

That could be 'black Jap' a very old laquer or aluminium wood primer maybe

You never know what people use..

If you want to bring the wood up so you can varnish it id suggest a coat of paint stripper and a good rub with one of those steel pan cleaners, then give it a good wash down with either white spirit or warm soapy water (rinse afterwards)
