painting hardwood

our windows have a hardwood sub frame with upvc opening lights. i want to paint or stain these frames grey ,what is the best way of going about this please.

Interior or exterior?

Interior- why not use a grey acrylic primer and then grey eggshell/gloss/etc. If it isn't a particularly dark grey then white acrylic primer should be fine.

If they are new then something like the grey Sadolins might be the option that will requires the least maintenance.

It is like a cross between a varnish and an oil. Easier to work with than primer/uc/gloss.
