painting old coving..

So assuming it's almost impossible to remove all the distemper, what is the best preparation before painting with emulsion..?

Funny thing is, this is the last room out of 7 that I've done, and the first time with this problem..

Personally id go for an oil or spirit based sealer...something that wont liven up again when over coated with emul

'traditional' undercoat?..or something more specialised?

Alkali resisting primer...im not sure if Zinseer/zamix do one too..some people used to say stabilising solution..I think thats very dodgy myself.

Thanks.

I got some Alkali resisting primer today, and have just put a coat on (after sanding the offending paint off - again!)..

I'll let you know how it goes when I put the emulsion on..

Good, though in future never again seal porous surfaces with PVA 1/3 WATER as it should be PVA 1/5 WATER (Sometimes two coats). The reason i advize this is cos when PVA is applied to thickly on u surface which governs it, then the PVA is flexible. Though u seem to have got away with it but if your coving was more porous then u would have probs in the future with blistering etc...........
