I recently have started stripping dark mahogany varnish off a bannister and after taking 3 hours to get less than a tenth of it done, I give up!

Rather than strip the whole lot and re-varnish, is it possible to sand down, prime and paint with satin silk paint?

Give it a really good rub down first, especially on the edges..then a coat of dulux super grip or zinseer bin..then on with the finishing coats.
