Painting soft wood skirting board

Can you tell me if i need to put a primer on softwood skirting board or can i place wood emulsion straight on it?

No such thing as 'wood emulsion'...bad practice to use emulsion as a primer..thats what acrylic primer is for.

You also have to treat the knots first.
